Examination for evidence of original upholstery

Skills

I am a qualified upholsterer and accredited upholstery conservator with 20 years experience across commercial trade workshops and international museums. I have particular skills in combining knowledge of historic materials and techniques with modern alternatives using minimally damaging attachments into the frame, to deliver high quality individual treatments. I can recommend pragmatic options to best suit the display and use of upholstered objects in a variety of different contexts.

Treatments

I offer a range of treatments, from thorough in-situ surface cleaning, patch supports, protective overlays and application of supports to stabilize aged materials and improve appearance; the temporary removal of covers for full linings, adjustments to under-upholstery, examination of frames prior to reapplication; to the application of reproduction textiles and trims. I also offer cane conservation, and some collection care services, including custom made storage covers and reproduction case covers.

Collaborations

I am used to working together with other specialist conservators, museum professionals and curators, undertaking background historical research and enjoy dealing with private clients and suppliers to understand individual needs and ensure the best treatment outcomes. I deliver training to young professionals and skilled volunteers to enhance their skills and knowledge. I have published upholstery conservation treatments, and have extensive professional experience presenting outreach activities.
